Paying Bills by Telephone

Some Banks will let you use the telephone to pay your bills.

You will need to dial the special telephone number.


When you have rung the telephone number, you will be asked some questions. It may be a real person asking you questions, or it may be a machine. You will be asked for some numbers and answers to security questions. These might be:

• What is your Account Number?
• What is your Sort Code?
• What is your secret telephone PIN? (This is NOT the same as a Bank Card PIN)
• Other special numbers and security details

You might be asked to say your answers out loud. Or you might be asked to put them into the telephone keypad.

You need to listen carefully to the questions and give the right answers.

It is important to remember to keep your security details secret and safe from all other people, except the Bank workers.

You must NEVER tell anyone your telephone PIN – not even your friends or the Bank workers.

You must also keep your Account Number and security details secret and safe from all other people, except the Bank workers.


#ACCOUNT NUMBER

This is the number that identifies your Bank Account - you will be the only person with this number.

#SORT CODE

This is the special number for your Bank. Each Bank
has a different number.
SECURITY DETAILS

These are things that the Bank will have on their files to make sure you are who you say you are and they are things like your date of birthor your mother’s maiden name. You are most likely to be asked for these things if you Bank by telephone or on the internet.
